Helping Students Present Their Research
نویسندگان
چکیده
With the guidance of an experienced research mathematician, there are many undergraduate students who are capable of professional level work in mathematics. The intent of this article is to assist mathematicians in helping their talented students become fully involved in the research experience. Such an experience will benefit the student, the adviser and the mathematics community. An essential part of a good research experience is the discipline of writing up the results of the research and presenting them. Presenting one’s research provides a good capstone event for a research experience. It helps the student to organize and focus the research results. Fortunately, the number of ways of doing this has increased in recent years, and each student researcher can find one that appeals to her/him personally. Apart from the traditional communication of publication in a printed journal, there are electronic journals, poster sessions and paper sessions at meetings. You can help your undergraduate research students choose the most appropriate methods of communicating their results depending on the depth of the results obtained, the personality of the undergraduate, and the logistical difficulties involved. As an item on a student’s resume, communicating the results of a research experience, whether in a journal, or at a mathematics meeting, is valued by graduate schools and potential employers alike.

Occupational therapy students' metaphors for helping.
Metaphors are powerful devices for eliciting images of practice. Exploring the metaphors of occupational therapy students provides educators with insight into students' prior knowledge and the constraints their ideas may present in practice. Metaphorical images of helping held by newly enrolled and Level II fieldwork students were examined. Responses to a structured, open-format questionnaire r...
متن کاملCitizen science, engagement and transformative learning: a study of the co-construction of a neuroscience research project in Catalonia
Citizen science can raise people’s understanding of science while helping scientists to conduct their research. Yet, its potential for driving transformative learning is empirically underexplored. We present the results of focus groups and participant observation with secondary-school students engaged in the first three years of a citizen science project, from the formulation of the research qu...
متن کاملHelping Students Manage Personalized Learning Scenarios
In personalized learning scenarios, students have control over their learning goals and how they want to learn which is advantageous since they tend to be more motivated and immersed in what they are learning. However, they need to regulate their motivation, affect and activities so they can learn effectively. Our research deals with helping students identify the long-term effects of their lear...
متن کاملHelping Students Become Skilled Practitioners
Becoming a skilled practitioner means learning both conceptual and process knowledge. We propose the use of hypermedia to provide components of an apprenticeship learning model for students, in which process and conceptual knowledge learning is integrated. Our model for this use of hypermedia is called an Apprenticeship Based Learning Environment (ABLE). We present seven design principles for a...
متن کاملThe inquiry paradox: why doing science doesn't necessarily change ideas about science
A long standing goal of science education in the United States has been that students develop an understanding of the nature of science, of what scientific knowledge is like and how it is constructed. Despite this interest, students continue to leave secondary schools with naïve views of the nature of science. Current science education reforms advocate inquiry as a way for students to learn abo...
